Comprehensive and Impactful Actions
Our Eco-Committee, along with Mr Price crafted a thoughtful and ambitious
Action Plan designed to make a tangible difference in the school and wider
community. Activities include a waste management and recycling programme,
collaborations with local organisations, clothing re-use swap-shops, the ‘Bug
Hotel’ biodiversity project and outreach efforts that have successfully raised
awareness about environmental issues. The school’s reduction in its carbon
footprint and energy output this year is a testament to the effectiveness of these
initiatives. As a school we also highlighted how sustainability has been
embedded into our curriculum across all key stages – we ran a broad spectrum
of trips and residentials which engaged students in areas such as biodiversity,
nature and the environment, as well as offering our Sixth Form students
opportunities to lead in sustainability. A highlight of our Eco-Schools journey is
the work started on our school’s Eco-Charter. This document reflects the
school’s values and aspirations, with clear goals for future environmental action
to help the school to move on to the highest ‘Merit’ green flag award.
Applying for the Award
To receive the Green Flag, our school followed
a rigorous process that included completing the
Eco-Schools Environmental Review, developing
an Action Plan and identifying how sustainable
action and awareness is built into our
curriculum. To achieve the more competitive
accreditation we knew that the application
required a detailed submission, including
examples of student work, evidence of the
school’s eco-friendly initiatives and records of
our community involvement with events such as
our Alliance Sustainability conference and the
annual ‘Rubbish Friends’ community
conference.
Mr Price, who is the schools’ Sustainability Lead said
“We are incredibly proud of the achievements of our Eco-Committee and the
entire school community. This award is a reflection of the hard work, creativity,
and passion that our students have shown for protecting the environment. We
are excited to continue our eco-journey and look forward to making an even
greater impact in the future.”
